about

These 3 tracks are an introduction to “Revolutionary Culture”, an original beat tape that places powerful audio excerpts of radical voices from the past and present into a contemporary musical context so that they may be heard and interpreted together, exposing listeners to various ideas presented by influential artists, musicians, authors, and organizers from throughout time. Reaching across many decades of struggle, this project implores you to consider the ways seemingly disparate concepts and ideas may in fact be intimately connected. You can hear the first 3 beats of this tape in this exhibition, which include the voices of James Baldwin, Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill, Fred Hampton, and Vietnam War Veteran Brian Wilson. “Revolutionary Culture” is named after the work and ideas of the Black Panther George Jackson, who asserted the need for fostering a revolutionary culture here in the United States. The tape in its entirety will be released later this year.
